Well CJ you have started this thread and are definitely supporting it, I hope it continues and doesn't degenerate into a slanging match. Because HC is based in Australia it maybe best if your replies don't always reference North America. I don't know much about Biden's EV and renewable's support policies but over here a new package has just been announced. The claim is that it will be market driven, we can only wait and see how it will turn out.
It's obvious that for wind and solar to be a practical major source of power the world needs plenty of storage. That can come in many forms, unfortunately none of them are cheap but with the adoption of EVs their batteries are a large and growing but under utilised resource. IMO we need V2X legislated for all new EVs preferably with a world wide standard. V2X in combination with variable tariffs would allow an EV battery to become part of a virtual "big battery" to soak up wind and solar peaks with low tariffs and supply power back to the grid during periods of high demand and increased tariffs.
With V2X the owner of the EV (or other) battery would be in control of the tariff thresholds for charging and discharging. As an example if the battery SOC was low (<20%) the charging price trigger maybe 30c kWh with no discharging allowed. If the SOC was >40% the charge trigger could drop to 20c and discharge at 90c. At >60% SOC, charge 10c, discharge 70c. At >80% SOC charge 5c, discharge 40c. At >90% SOC the software would only accept charge if it had zero cost but sell it for 20c kWh and at >95% SOC you could be paid 5c kWh to accept power and 10c kWh to give it back.
The consumer would set their thresholds so that the profit from arbitrage trading would cover the reduced service life of their battery from increased cycling, they would be adjusted for time of day so that there was plenty of charge in the EV for transport requirements and also be adjusted for the predicted daily sun and/or wind conditions. It would not matter where in the connected charging network the EV was plugged in, it could participate in V2X at home, work or elsewhere although shopping centres may choose to opt out so their charging stations are not clogged up with EVs utilising V2X.
