Have to also correct you. AC losses are also reduced by increasing voltage hence transmission being 500KV. Uou see Power is Watts (heat) p=I(sq)r. BUT power also = V*I. So to reduce I and R is the cable characteristics, unchangeable, and keep that given power rating on the grid we must increase V, voltage. In DC we blast HP air through the arc when a CB opens which physically bends the arc and breaks it. 500KV AC substation circuit breakers do the same. Keep researching CJ. Im with you all the way and I haven't had to pick up a text book for a refresher yet. And yes, the Power station controllers vary the DC excitation on the ROTOR field to export import VARS to keep pf at unity. I don't know about a capacitor being a little square box but the ones we installed looked like a small version of a renewable battery farm. And Ill beat you to it , the capacitors are delta connected and bussed onto the grid BEFORE the LV HV transformation. Anyhow Im happy your interested but we are needing to concentrate on Lynas a little more.
