IMO, the economics of running an EV will have to be looked at so that the general taxpayer does not have to foot the bill for the entire costs of roads & raods' infrastructure.
We have a hybris sustem at present: -States' rego fees -Fuel Excise (with GST) by the Commonewealth
At present the States' rego fees have been reduced for EV requiring the general taxpayer to pay more for Transport infrastucture
And of course the Commonwealth wont be collecting and fuel excise (+the GST) on EVs which adds to the burden on the general taxpayer to maintain.develop transport infrastructure.
Take the average ICE car: -State Rego: $800 P/A (EV $200 P/A) -Travels 20,000 kms P/A on average with an average of say 8 litres/100 kms (thats 1600 litres/P/A or $800 of Fuel excise including GST
So in summary, to maintain the status quo, EVs will have to pay an extra $1400 P/A on average or an EV toll of 7c/km
