The ex date is the important date as it determines whether your transaction will be settled by the record date.
To gain an entitlement you need to be holding through the ex date (i.e. holding while cum entitlement until it goes ex and the depth is cleared)... if you buy after the ex date you will not be entitled, regardless of the record date.
