it was ever true. when you are in trouble, and the market knows you are in trouble, you are in more trouble.

If the really big players know some other big shorts are losing control the shorts are in seriously deep doodoo. Think Soros/Bank of England style trouble. The shorts will exacerbate the the problem by closing out as the buyes pile in.

I don't think it has even started yet. The shorts could be several billion dollars underwater, but when they have paid 20-30 billion in bonuses, it isn't the end of the world (yet) for them. But looks good for us longs.
