Aviva Corporation Ltd (ASX:AVA, BSE:AVIVA) (“Aviva” or “the Company”) is pleased to
announce further significant gold intercepts from follow up RC and diamond drilling at its
Bushiangala and Kimingini Prospects in the Kakamega Camp. These results support and
extend the positive results announced in August 2011. An initial resource from the Kakamega
Camp remains on target for the first half of 2012.
Results have been received from the initial reconnaissance drilling at a number of other
prospects in the Kakamega Gold Camp. All of the prospects returned anomalous gold results
and most will warrant follow up drilling.
RC drilling proved technically challenging in the Kakamega area where variable, deep
weathering and deeper than expected mine workings led to a number of holes being
abandoned prior to reaching targeted depth. While this is encouraging for the gold endowment
at Kakamega the RC rig was moved to the Lake Zone and drilling continues at Kakamega with
two diamond drill rigs.
Results have now been received from 32 of the 37 RC holes and 22 of the 31 diamond holes
drilled in Kakamega Camp. A total of 4,400m has been drilled in the Kakamega area. Total
metres drilled to date on the JV area as a whole stands at 10,799 metres. Drilling continues at
Kakamega with two diamond rigs. An update on exploration activities in the Bumbo Base
Metals precinct will be available next week.WEST KENYA PROJECT
In July 2010, Aviva signed an Earn-in and Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) over the highly
prospective West Kenya gold and base metals project, with AfriOre International, a wholly
owned subsidiary of Lonmin Plc. The project comprises 2,800km² of the highly prospective
Ndori Greenstone belt in Kenya, with excellent infrastructure access. Previous exploration has
identified significant potential for gold, as well as copper, lead and zinc.
Three project areas have been identified within the Joint Venture area which will attract similar
resources and effort in the 2010/11 year. The Bumbo base metal precinct; where the potential
for high grade base metals deposits has been demonstrated. The Kakamega Gold Camp;
where the potential higher grade gold deposits has been demonstrated in an area known to
have supported Kenya’s largest historical gold mine - Rosterman. The Lake District; where
structural and geological mapping suggest a setting similar to the Abitibi gold belt in Canada
with the potential for known gold occurrences to point to large tonnage gold systems.
KAKAMEGA GOLD CAMP
The area is dominated by the Kakamega Dome comprised of Nyanzian volcanic and
subordinate sediments intruded by early syn-tectonic and late granites. Wrapping around the
Dome are Kavirondian sediments. The geological interpretation of the area includes a
structural model whose framework is dominated by early-formed syn-sedimentary extensional
fault structures that developed during deposition of the Kavirondian sediments. A progressive,
protracted contractional deformation event followed sedimentation and involved inversion of
some syn-sedimentary structures. Contractional deformation is thought to overlap with gold
mineralisation with both events envisaged as punctuated multi-increment processes.
Follow up RC and diamond drilling of previous results at Bushiangala and Kimingini prospects
has retuned very encouraging intercepts. Results are still pending for a number of holes.
Reconnaissance RC and diamond drilling has been undertaken at Bukura, Isulu,
Shitole/Ibwale, Sigalagala, Lerembe, and Makuchi. All prospects with the exception of Makuchi
are close to the structure hosting or associated with the Bushiangala and KiminginiProspects.
Makutchi is interpreted to be similar in style and structural setting to Dahahabu prospect
further to the east and located within a folded and dislocated hinge zone to more competent
quartzites within encompassing mudstones.
All prospects drilled to date are characterised by artisanal workings, colonial mines and
extensive gold-in-soil anomalies. None of the prospects targeted above had been drilled since
the 1940’s.
Brief descriptions and assay results received to date from the reconnaissance and follow up
drilling at a number of prospects follows. Prospects drilled to date are shown in Figure 2. A
complete table of new Kakamega assay results is appended to this release.
