Sure. Here's the page from the NY State Court System that allows you to search for lawyers. You'll see there's no NC licensed. You have to use a last name and a first initial. If you put in some very common name like "j smith" you'll get tons of hits and you can see from the big list that the whole range of possible license statuses come up . . from "currently registered" to "due to register", to "suspended", "disbarred", "resigned" and even "deceased". Once someone gets a license they stay in the database whether they keep it up, give it up, or have it taken away.

And here's the site that allows you to check CPA registration. It's done by state but this is a cooperative effort by the states to compile one database.
