Maybe just the scale of the industry?
If one visits retail outlets - there are a lot of places that sell product with fabric in it.
But - outlets that sell products with plastic just dwarf them.
Even looking at it basically - there are shops that sell products with lots of plastic, but hardly any or no fabric - but almost every fabric shop has many plastic lines.
Pretty simplistic view - but could be instructive.
Also with plastic - there are always a zillion new gadgets being made- all the time - new technologies - new mixes perhaps.
Whatever it is - if we thought there was a lot of fabric in our man-made world - well, boy, there is a hell of a lot of plastic
