You are getting confused with the use of the word diagnosis in the article.
Diagnosis in medical terms means the process of identifying a disease or condition from its signs or symptoms. A health history, physical exam or tests such as blood tests, Imaging, bioposies or lung function may be used to make a diagnosis.
So diagnosis = identifying the disease / condition of asthma using test (lung function) and physical exam (doctor examination) and blood tests.
