”Overall, the reefs are parallel to bedding. in a few places, quartz veins are situated on lithological boundaries, generally between siltstone and claystone ("slate"), or between siltstone and sandstone. In detail, however, the veins locally transgress bedding. Such transgression of bedding by quartz veins was found in the underground workings (plan 7809) and in a creek exposure (plan 7811).
According to newspaper articles written at the time of mining, the South Star mine veins passed from sandstone into slate at a depth of 50 m. This is just as likely to have resulted from a facies change as from any transgression of bedding by the vein.
It is likely that, as at Hawkins Hill, the richer gold values along the South Star line were in the form of pitching ore shoots. The limited information on stope pattern (see plan 7810) indicates that the shoots may have pitched steeply. The work done on the 36 m level of the South Star No, 3 (plan 7809) is consistent with an anticipated vertical or southerly pitch.”
