The veins are most probably epigenetic. They were formed before the development of the regional cleavage and before the intrusion of the Kanimblan granites. They were perhaps formed during diagenesis and soft-sediment deformation. The evidence is as follows:
1. The cleavage is older than the Kanimblan granites.
2. Quartz veins parallel to cleavage have not been formed. The cleavage is therefore most probably younger than the mineralising event/s.
3. While the veins are generally parallel to bedding, there are notable exceptions that cut bedding.
4. The veins and reefs at all stratigraphic levels in the South Star area have a propensity to die out and re—appear in several places over very short intervals; this is not very consistent with a syngenetic origin, such as fall from ash clouds or chemical precipitation on the sea floor (although it must be conceded that precipitation and/or preservation of auriferous siliceous deposits may have taken place in local structures, such as troughs).
5. There is no wall rock alteration; this supports a non hydrothermal origin.
6. No evidence of any fumaroles has been found..
