If the South Star line is in fact an extension of the Hawkins Hill line, then it could be argued that the chances of finding extremely rich gold deposits at South Star are increased. Such an argument is incorrect (see next section).
Firstly, however, the relationship of South Star to Hawkins Hill should be examined. A cursory perusal of the geology on plan 7812 could suggest, incorrectly, that the South Star is a faulted southern extension of the Hawkins Hill line. However, the faulting appears to have displaced neither the axis of the western Anticline nor the contact between the Cooan and Chesleigh Formations. More importantly, the South Star reefs dip to the west, the Hawkins Hill reefs dip to the east.
This leads to the more likely possibility that the South Star and Hawkins Hill lodes occupy similar stratigrahic positions, but are situated on different limbs of the Western Anticline. Results from the recent investigations at South Star, while inconclusive, suggest that the lodes do not occupy similar stratigraphic positions. The rock types are different.
The rich auriferous reefs at Hawkins Hill occur in claystones, particularly where carbonaceous material is present. The reefs at South Star occur in sandy and silty rocks; no carbonaceous material was found. As stated by Bowman et al. (1975), determination of the stratigraphic positions of the South Star and Hawkins Hill line would require considerable geological investigation, perhaps several man weeks’ work.
