Export facility promises jobs boost
Posted July 12, 2011 13:00:00
Port Pirie Mayor Brenton Vanstone hopes a new export facility will provide a catalyst for further investment.
Mining company WPG Resources has had its Peculiar Knob mine in the far north, and barge export system in Port Pirie, approved by both the federal and state governments.
It is expected construction will begin at the end of the month.
Councillor Vanstone says about 60 jobs are expected to be created in and around the Port Pirie region, which are desperately needed.
"We need alternative employment options for Port Pirie and [the] region and this is why things like the camel abattoir and this is why we're approaching the people from the Braemer Iron Alliance," he said.
"We're negotiating with many other companies as well to provide employment alternatives to the very important Nyrstar smelter."
