Port of Hastings is nearer the deep water than Port of Melb (have a look on Google maps.) Has a small fishing fleet, an old naval small ship facility and a small BHP ingot handling wharf. My concerns are the rapidity with which local interest groups can mobilise to oppose infrastructure development. The two requirements for a Hastings port are an augmented rail loop (easy-ish) a wharf/coal handling facility and a short channel deepening (if that is a word).
