Release of exposure draft of Defence Trade Controls Regulations for public consultations

Exposure drafts of the Defence Trade Controls Regulations 2012 are now available for public and industry consultation, an important part of the process of getting the Regulations right.

The draft Regulations are available for comment until 17 February 2012.

Former Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare introduced the Defence Trade Controls Bill 2011 into Parliament on 2 November 2011. The House of Representatives passed the Bill on 21 November 2011.

The Bill will strengthen Australia’s export controls and implement the Australia – United States Defence Trade Cooperation Treaty.

The Treaty will create a framework for trade between Australia and the United States in certain defence materiel, technology and services without the need for United States or Australian export licences.

In accordance with the Bill, the draft Regulations prescribe specific requirements and obligations of the Australian Community membership and associated assessment processes and other matters.
