GRACETOWN
Setting new standards in
sustainable coastal living
Creative water, sewerage and power
supply options will position the Gracetown
development as a model for sustainable
coastal living.
The proposed 140-lot residential
development at the popular seaside
holiday destination on Cowaramup Bay
has seen the development of a concept
plan which evolved through a series of
consultations with the local community.
Sustainable outcomes from the
development proposal included:
• Preservation of up to 40 per cent of
the natural environment within the
development site through retention of
natural vegetation.
• Provision of a self-sufficient water supply
and wastewater treatment plant to improve
ground and surface water quality.
• Use of renewable energy sources to give
the town a more reliable energy supply
including options for roof mounted
photovoltaic cells.
• Excavations to follow the topography
of the land, rather than levelling and
benching to encourage houses to be built
into the hillside to maximise passive
solar access.
• Reduced reliance on motor vehicles
by creating walkable community and
public spaces.
• Trials of a system to convert wave
energy into electricity and desalinated
freshwater are also being investigated.
Planning evolved through
consultation
The project’s Structure Plan has evolved
based on community input gained through
a series of consultation events held on-site
at Gracetown.
