This photo has been speculated on in the past. Some claimed it was Photoshopped. Apparently the vein was protruding enough to drop the shaft in. The photographic angle makes adds to the illusion.
Now if I were to stumble across a vein like this, I would be taking hundreds of high resolution photos & boosting it publicly big time.
The thing is, this photo is now that old it pretty much pre-dates digital photography.
