I find it extremely difficult to believe. Either the rock surface is the wall or face of a drive which has been blasted. This process would have removed any such protuberance, thus rendering this solution impossible.
I have done a lot of underground blasting in my time and never seen that occur.
I have also done a lot of photography, including development and printing.
Picture modification was all the rage way before photoshop was invented....
