You bring out an important precedent wrt Singapore. Israel was the first country to recognise Singapore when they were thrown out of Malaysia 50+ years ago, with no industry, no land, and no military but a strategic waterway. Singapore is a true multi-cultural model where there is some equitable distribution of political power when it comes to political leadership. The Malay minority are also given certain privileges, etc. It could just as easily follow Israel from a geo-religious threat with its neighbors but it knows its place in a region where diplomacy trumps the type of mindset within the current (especially) Govt policies, not that Likud and lesser extent Labor are any better. Oh, and Singaporeans did not have a heavenly mandate when it came to land titles. This is where any commonality ends.
Israel is a very smart nation industrially with leading-edge tech pioneering efforts and Elbit is just one current example. If you look at her neighbors, some are friendly towards the West economically at the very least and others are a psychological threat to the West generally speaking. Interesting on the Sunni and Shia divide. Hamas was a useful political entity at the time when they won the Gaza election and @cosmoterious has already posted many links to the financing encouragements by Israel through Qatar. The 'divide & rule' British concept to split the PA monopoly under Arafat, was he assassinated or died of natural cause?
The cynic in me thinks Gaza was just the temporary solution looking for a very good excuse to evict land holders with some suggesting 70% were the original descendants of Nakba from 1947. Others have also observed that anti-semitism was a result of European treatment of their Jewish citizens instead of the birthplace from the Middle East!
Currently, there are no solutions as the global West has decided that for whatever reasons they will offer diplomatic, military, and moral shields to Israel under all circumstances. In the Arab world, the split is also very conspicuous between those who offer botox lip service for fear of instigating their own citizens' discontent to those who are actively trying to support the Pallie cause with the South Africans much more sympathetic from their own bitter experiences.
No idea if there is any truth but recently it was tweeted that Egypt is preparing a block of land in the Sinai desert for the very reason of Israel's eviction of Gazans under the pretense of shoving people to imaginary safe zones. Don't you think it is comical when the safe zones seem to creep towards Rafah and then into Egypt?
Morality isn't what it used to be and those that drove Jewish Achkernazis out of their homes in Europe are now looking for ways to make sure they get permanent land under the cover of stealth theft. Funny to hear that some studies suggest Arabs are closer to the Semitic tribes through ancestry DNA and using such tools is forbidden in Israel unless with a court order.
