There are a lot of issues associated with Unmanned Underwater Vehicles ...... including power supply, communications etc. The Pentagon will doubtlessly spend countless billions trying to design largish "multimission" machines ..... without necessarily considering the lessons learned from the F35 program.

A cost effective solution may sit in the middle ...... very lightly manned coastal defence subs with semi-autonomous system capacities and a fairly narrow (optimised) mission spread. Match these subs to a larger (maybe older) mother sub and you get range capability. Matching mini subs to mother subs has been done before. Ultimately very small underwater drones will be used in conjuction with subs and other naval vessels.
