Australia would be much better served imo to invest heavily in unmanned drones, which could remain operational in our North over much longer timeframes and provide a much better real time coverage of our oceans and borders.
These can now be equipped with highly effective air to air and air to surface missiles which could deal with just about any threat.
All controlled from 3 bases say at Derby WA, Darwin NT and Townsville QLD.
