TELSTRA boss Sol Trujillo and his "Three Amigo" executive compadres are in the gun sights of furious Coalition MPs who want them out the door.
Dissatisfaction with "Sol and his mates" has even spread to federal Cabinet, raising the prospect of government intervention.
"It's now a widely held view in the Government that Telstra is being less than co-operative," a government source said.
Mr Trujillo has been Telstra CEO since July 2005. He hired three American senior executives -- Phil Burgess, Greg Winn and William Stewart.
Mr Trujillo earned $8.7 million this year, including a $2.58 million bonus.
But he has also overseen a 25 per cent fall in Telstra's share price. Profits fell 26 per cent last year to $3.18 billion.
The Government is a 51 per cent shareholder in the telco giant, but cannot interfere with executive appointments.
Only the board can do that, although board members are appointed by the Government.
Nationals MP Paul Neville, who chairs the Coalition's backbench telecommunications committee, said many MPs had had enough.
"I think the Government should consider its options -- where the remainder of Telstra shares should go and who their directors should be on that board," Mr Neville said.
Mr Neville has been joined in his criticism by other MPs, including Alex Somlyay, Peter Lindsay and Don Randall.
This week Telstra cancelled plans to roll out a high-speed broadband network, citing regulatory issues with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
"There is a mood in the party room that says we've had enough of this obfuscation, floating plans and then calling them off on the grounds that the regulatory environment is allegedly too tough," Mr Neville said. "Telstra is treating the Government with contempt."
Mr Neville stopped short of suggesting the Telstra board be fired. But he called on Communications Minister Helen Coonan to use her powers to take greater control.
"I think she'd have the backing of the party room."
