In the interim, the RAAF just needs something spritely with a longish range, good radar and two engines. The optimal choice IMHO would be the Eurofighter Typhoon because it can carry more missiles (more critical than anything else as we move towards future generation missiles.
In the longer term, a DC3 with a radar dome and future generation missiles will outperform any of the current 5th Gen stealth jets from anywhere. Why? I shouldn't need to say but I will. 1) missiles will incorporate longer range and magnitude advancements in artificial intelligence. They may have a return to base landing capacity and a fuel saving drone like loiter capacity and/or be attached to drones that share an AI capacity. 2) The better the radar the earlier the launch.
For similar reasons, tanks and large subs are also obsolescent wastes of money.
