An interesting post, Boopaphiney.

I once got sacked from a school. The story too long to write here. It was one of my proudest moments and truly funny.

I identify with your thinking re if you had the choice between a few more dollars of income or improved conditions within your classroom, your choice would be the latter. Teachers who took on positions of responsibility would have less time for lesson preparation, corrections, etc
and, after tax, would be getting a pittance for that job. I never ever wanted these jobs, because I knew a single successful share trade would mean an equivalent gain within minutes.

I was always aware that the smartest students were attracted to the science/maths area, leaving the remainder within the commerce/arts type subject areas. Of course, this is a generalisation. In my final teaching year, I had a student who performed within the top 3% of students statewide, for example.

His interests were in both law and economics but he would have succeeded whatever he did. I have followed him, using Google, and he is indeed living up to his intellectual gifts.

Of course, teaching is often rewarding and gives us insights which remain with us forever. Where else can you watch the growth of a child among their peers on a daily basis across several years? I learned much by being a teacher. It's addictive. Spent 38 years in the game... but now my addiction has turned to the lithium economy and, in particular, the great company LionTown. Lucky us.
