Debono, I am in the same boat as you. I couldn't believe it when text messages came in (around 98 for me). I thought what a ridiculous concept and why wouldn't you just call. For the past 10 years, I probably send on average 30 messages a day. Twitter was another that i just didn't get and couldn't believe all the fuss.
I am sure the great minds at facebook have a plan and will evolve with time and what a database they have to work from.
Facebook is and will continue to be part of our culture. Numbers will continue to rise because not an overly large percentage of 30+ yo olds have accounts. However, over the next 10 years, every kid growing up will have a web page and those teens now will be close to their 30's. How many of those people going into their 30's will have an account? I am guessing a much larger percentage than today. On top of that, the poorer nations of the world are developing.
I don't know how they are going to evolve and look at other revenue streams, but i am very confident Facebook will be as big, if not bigger in 10 years time.
I have been a hotcopperite for nearly 13 years and the adds have not once detracted from my enjoyment on this site.
I'm going to buy my nephew $1k worth of shares and see how they are in 10 years time. It might be a good wedding present for him.
For those that haven't read this article, it would be nice if FB did the same.
