Lynas is deeply concerned and offended with the latest false statements and inferences Dr Chan Chee Koon, a professor of health and social policy at Universiti Sains Malaysia made against Lynas Corporation and the Lynas Advanced Materials Plan. In the article by the Malaysian Insider, ?Expert warns that Kuantan residents will be lab rats?, Dr Chan Chee Koon made false allegations against Lynas questioning the company?s business integrity and radiation assessment conducted by the plant.

As part of obtaining the company?s staged approval process, Lynas has been granted approvals from the Department of Environment, Atomic Energy Licensing Board and Nuclear Malaysia proving the safety of the Lynas Advanced Material Plant. To claim that Lynas would make the Kuantan community ?lab rats? is completely false and misleading to the public.

In addition, making comparisons with Bukit Merah is just irresponsible. Lynas has repeatedly stated that the Lynas raw material processed in Malaysia is not the same as the raw material processed at Bukit Merah. The Asian Rare Earth raw material tin tailings contained thorium levels 50 times higher than the raw material used in the LAMP plant. Since the Bukit Merah incident, the Malaysian government has now tightened regulatory processes severely. Nobody wants to see a repeat of Bukit Merah, as not only was it a tremendous tragedy but a huge cost to the government, community and company.

We are confident that the review that LAMP plant will confirm the plant?s safety and present no hazard to the community or Lynas workers.
