I reckon the internet/smart phones and all it's various apps etc are actually a great thing for older people . It keeps you connected and yet at arms length if that's what you want . I reckon some of this technology actually empowers older , less mobile people .
Look at chatrooms for example . You can talk to like minded people whenever you want . Imagine being stuck in a house without the internet ?
The nerds tell me that this is the year of the personal assistant . Siri , Cortana , Alexa etc . Apparently they are getting that good that they kind of learn your habits so they will be far more helpful rather than being just a dumb assistant . It remains to be seen but I think they could be really good for oldies because they will help them with technology .
I have a facebook account that I never use . I only got it because a lot of companies use facebook rather than a website so sometimes you need to use it . Otherwise I don't use it all . It's probably great for people that need to be connected all the time , such as families , but it doesn't work for me . My friends that are on facebook don't even know what my facebook page is . They are on facebook a lot . They reckon I'm that I'm scared to use it even though I keep telling them that the format just doesn't work for me as I never check it . I have several people explain how it works but I've come to the conclusion that you need to be on it a lot . You can do the alert thing so you don't have to check it but I reckon that becomes distracting .
Same as twitter . I find it ok for something like a live sporting event as there is always plenty going on in the background . Otherwise , it's a bit like facebook . You have to be on it all the time ( like the girl in the article ) and I reckon it would consume your life .
Embrace technology I say . Just don't use stuff because everyone is . Find what works for you . It will make your life easier or better if you use it the right way .
