The status with universities is where it is because, (a) since too long before academics had failed to connect to real life, and (b) the government has failed to think long term prosperity and the value in research. Put the two together, universities turned to a business model and hence shifting focus from transferring knowledge to students, to attracting "clients" (yes, students ARE termed as clients, who need to be kept satisfied).
