There was always going to be a tension between domestic factors driving the economy down (esp housing related) and global factors potentially pulling the other way. My crystal ball was never going to tell me which way the winds of fortune would finally blow - and it remains unclear (certainly to me).
i've studied the international experience vis a vis property/GDP/retail_spend. The correlation is compelling.
I don't know what will happen, but I'm not sure it's wise to ignore what might.
