The government rebate was about 30% when we got our system. But we still had to pay the other 70%. The rebate's probably less now. Meanwhile FIT is gradually decreasing... So it will take about 8 years before we are free carry. We won't be paying "less" for power until then.
It's unfair that some people have to rent, I guess, but most people who own houses are paying off a large mortgage.
