You will find that Abbott started to get some negative press when LNP fell behind in the polls not long after being elected, all that got mentioned then was that normally a new government has a honey moon period and it was unusual that Abbott had a particularly short one.

Not much was made of that and being behind in the polls was no big deal with the best part of 3 years of government ahead.

The 2014 may budget was when Abbott really started to get bad press, the cuts and broken promises didn't go down well and the LNP plunged in the polls big time. Can you blame the media for reporting it for what it was?

Abbott left himself open to bad press due to ongoing poor polling and it didn't help with his captains picks on knight's and dames then the Knighting of prince Phillip had people on all side shaking their heads in disbelief.

From there early this year we had cabinet leaks and leadership speculation which as expected lead to the spill motion and Abbott near death experience.We know from that point Abbott was on probation and the focus would be on him and getting the LNP back ahead in the polls.

Well after a vote buying May budget, more blunders from and 6 months from the spill motion it's not surprising MP's are getting nervous. These leaks from cabinet are obviously designed to further leadership speculation and bring on another spill.

The media are just reporting on the information given to them and what ever else they find when they investigate that information. For example a reporter will mention that got some information and they ring up other MP's to hear other points of view.
