People who are in the mainstream of political views whether Liberal/Labor/conservative/progressive are mostly positive contributors to society imo.
Unfortunately they sometimes do allow themselves to be tainted by by giving too much latitude to the more extreme elements in their respective sides. In the USA its been the white supremacists and conspiracy theorists who have been given too much latitude by the Trump administration and yes I agree with you that only served to harm the Republicans who as a consequence have lost control of the White House, the House and the Senate.
