I think BHPs forward analysts were aware that there would be a contraction (prob unsure of magnitude) and so launched offer at rios/BHPs high ie 3.4:1, which would always look good if shares dropped.
BHPs bid was near BHPs high which from a technical view was 1.618 fibonacci extention and so it was always on the cards for share price to drop (but who knew how far) other than to expect it would fall and again making bid look better and better.
Anyway looks to be working
