I'm keen to invest in clean energy stocks but as they stand most in Australia are a waste of money at the moment. Essentially they are sitting on projects waiting for a price signal and burning cash.
Some are waking up and finding their fortunes overseas / niche markets where they compete with diesel and can actually turn a dollar. Yet even then the timelines from "we are going to do it " to "we have done it" are exceedingly slow. Having been burned by investing too early in these companies, I am largely resricting myself to investing in active projects rather than paper portfolios of tenaments that power nothing except investment presentations.
If I do make an "investment" in a capital raising for green tech companies, it is essentially coming out of my charity funds, not my investment funds. Its a worthwhile charity for all the reasons BB points out but hardly an investment.
