Kind of starts from birth for most all of us, when inculcation into mother's word becomes the norm, until puberty comes knocking. Even then the remnants of NO NO conditioning and maternal behavioural management stick.
So when the marriage goes south the guilt is shunted to the furthest image of mum and that, by default, is the dominant male in the equation. The battle is not only between husband and wife, but between husband and the court bench's mothers, between the husband and mothers everywhere, between the husband and the male guilt of not being burdened with motherly pinky bits and nurture instincts. But the biggest battle for the male is:
"Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned" and the galvanising influence it has in attracting sympathetic sisters to the cause.
