Tax bonuses rolled out from April 6
    March 12, 2009
    Article from: Australian Associated Press
TAXPAYERS earning less than $100,000 will start receiving a cash bonus from April 6 as part of the Federal Government's $42 billion stimulus package.

But they have only until Sunday to make sure the payment is made to the right bank account or posted to the right address.

The Australian Tax Office will make payments of up to $900 directly to bank accounts or postal addresses appearing on last year's tax return.

Tax commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo said about 2.6 million people changed their contact details last year.

"We know there are still some people in the community who need to update their details from those provided in last year's return," he said.

Anyone needing to update bank account or postal address details needs to do so by Sunday March 15.

Taxpayers who have not lodged their 2007-08 tax return need to do so by June 30, 2009, to be eligible for the payment.

Anyone affected by natural disasters, significant illness or injury are eligible for an extension to June 30, 2010.

Eligibility for the bonus and its actual amount is determined by last year's return.

"You are probably eligible if you were an Australian resident and paid tax in 2007-08 and your taxable income was $100,000 or less," Mr D'Ascenzo said.

Centrelink started rolling out cash handouts to single income families and the back-to-school bonus this week.
