if you beat a dog it'll learn to fear you and if you keep beating it will become dangerously reactionary and defensive, if you keep beating it'll become a cringing ball and if you continue beating it'll either die or attack you.
punishment by prison doesn't deter either the person or any other potential violent people.
it just makes them more dangerously reactionary and defensive.
