The first well may have failed to produce good commercial oil or gas but it helps to build the picture of the complex hydrocarbon geology in the region and will help to determine the next drill location. IMO I would have drilled 50m on the Gambian side of the border to determine if SNE extends into the Gambia as my first drill location, but perhaps they already know that it does and went for the wildcat
