The reality is that the wheat market is an international market and the prices for physical that are bid for tenders from various sellers normally can have a blanket thrown over them. Where extra dollars are made are in the areas of quality, freight and efficiency.
Quality and freight is taken care of in Australia regardless so AWB can only offer efficiency. An efficient monopoly? I don't think so.
What AWB do offer is security and that comes at a price. If farmers are prepared to keep paying that price for the security of getting paid then their is merit in that. I suspect a better system would see a combination of both.
I also agree that soft commodities are on the move. Next few years will be very interesting...
