On Sky the other night there was a guest suggesting to build nuclear power plants as they do in Canada.
They mentioned a plant selling electricity to retailers for 4c per kwh. Households and businesses paying 8c per kwh.
South Australians are paying 40-50c per kwh.
He then went on to suggest using this cheap power to run desalination plants and piping the water to the arid inland regions to drought proof the country.
To me there was a lot of common sense in his idea.
It ticks all the boxes with emissions and climate change.
We could mothball all our gas and coal.
We have 40% of the worlds Uranium resources.
Australia could feed the world if it had this cheap water.
Almost single handedly we could alleviate the worlds famine.
The only problem is Australia has decided to ban nuclear power.
It is now 50 years since Chernobyl that cost the lives of about 140 - 180 people.
The mistake with Fukushima was the site on which it was built. Even so, there were no fatalities from radiation.
There are 450 nuclear plants in operation around the world today. Another 60 under construction. Another 150-160 in the planning stage. When completed they will provide almost 50% of existing capacity.
