This particular field was first considered uneconomical to develop until new drilling proved up much larger quantities of gas many years later. This is how things work in the oil industry, some discoveries can take decades to be developed, or never, while others get developed straight away. The Ekofisk field, for instance, was discovered in 1996 and was starting production in 1971. It eventually went to 500,000 bopd in around 1976. It is currently producing 110,000 bopd and is expected to go on for another 20 years, or more. Serious money in this business, indeed.
