fda, glaxo warn of death due to anti-flu medic, page-5

This article simply says that Relenza caps should not be broken open, mixed with water/saline, and put into a nebuliser. It's like saying you should not crush Panadol tablets and inject them. Obviously a doctor somewhere with a ventilated flu patient (in other words, comatose and on the brink of death) tried to mix up a home made nebuliser solution of Relenza, forgetting that the Relenza made for the diskhaler has lactose in it. The lactose caused a blockage in the ventilator set-up, the blockage stopped the ventilator working properly, and the patient died.

    What this means is:
We should have a specially made lactose free Relenza solution for nebulisers (produced for experiments but not for sale so far)
We should have properly produced IV Relenza for these situations.

It does not mean that Relenza caused death. It does mean you should not stick lactose in nebulisers, especially in a ventilated patient. It does show the desperation and demand out there for alternative Relenza delivery modes.
