What is ‘Age Related Hypogonadism”
Key points from the FDA document are:
 In some men, Testosterone levels decline for no apparent reason other than age;
 The decline is normally modest, but, concentrations can fall below the lower limit
of the normal range for young healthier men;
 This is referred to as ‘Age Related Hypogonadism’. A study reported the
percentage of study subjects in the hypogonadal range was 20, 30 and 50
percent of men in their 50’s 60’s and 70’s respectively1
.
 Ageing men often experience many of the signs and symptoms that are
associated with hypogonadism, including decreases in energy levels, sexual
function, bone density, muscle mass and strength and increases in fat mass.
BUT, the crucial point was the author’s conclusion:
‘whether these symptoms are a clinical consequence of the age related decline in
endogenous testosterone (naturally levels) has not been established, and therefore, the
need to replace testosterone in these older men remains debatable.’
This final quote puts the FDA’s view in proper context. In our view, the FDA does not have
a concern regarding the benefit to patients genuinely diagnosed with hypogonadism.
