"Driving people to find ways of ending their own lives should be avoided. I knew a person who while doing military training was diagnosed with a form of cancer that gave him a very short life expectency. He requested that his life be humanely ended when he reached the stage at which he could do little for himself. This request was refused. He tried to take his life with a military assault rifle that could kill an elephant and in spite of being trained to use the weapon botched his attempt and blew half his face away without killing himself."

That's an excellent example of what can happen when people try to kill themselves. Another is slow strangulation when someone imagines they will procure a quick death by hanging.
Similarly all the people who end up just irrevocably damaging themselves by taking what they imagine will be a fatal dose of prescription drugs without any actual knowledge of potency, interactions etc.
Perhaps one of the most awful actions a person can take is to throw themselves in the path of an oncoming train or truck etc. The trauma that results for the train or truck driver can only be imagined by most of us.
