This is last thing related to hep a i can find on nine msn ... actually this is interesting, think im right in saying that select have a hep a test that can rule out whether you actually need to give people the vaccine ... cheaper than delivering vaccine to all. Given select has retained rights to the hep a test in australia and nz, they might get some easy revenue out of this.

Around 30,000 indigenous children will be eligible for a free hepatitis A vaccine under a new program announced by Health Minister Tony Abbott.

The vaccination program will be available from November to indigenous children aged five years and under, living in Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia.

There was a high incidence of hepatitis A among indigenous children living in the four states, with six deaths recorded since 1993, Mr Abbott said in a statement.

Vaccines will be given in two doses, with the first to be administered from 12 months of age and the second six months later.

Launching the program in Alice Springs, Mr Abbott said the scheme will cost about $1.6 million over the next four years.

"The commonwealth government is committed to the National Immunisation Program to ensure that best possible protection against vaccine preventable disease is provided to our children," he said.

Mr Abbott said the government spent just $13 million on vaccines in 1996, with spending on national vaccination programs jumping to $285 million in 2004/05.
