WA News Shire eyes mining expansion Monday, November 2, 2009
The Shire of Morowa is hoping the go-ahead for Gindalbie Metals' Karara Project will pave the way for more mining approvals in mid-west Western Australia.
The Federal Government gave the $1.8 billion project the green light on Friday after the company received State Government approval in September.
The project is set to be the region's first major iron ore operation.
Shire CEO Gavin Treasure says the decision is good news for the region.
"Hopefully it's created a benchmark to enable projects to follow the approvals system," he said.
"There's a lot of projects in and around our region looking for commencement. So with Gindalbie given the green light and hopefully with Sinosteel not too far away, it augurs well for our future."
