Scott Morrison has announced the biggest expansion of the nation’s defence force since the Vietnam War today as he fights a savage backlash over the speed of the ADF deployment in flood-affected regions.
In the biggest expansion of the armed forces in 40 years, defence force recruits will rise from 60,000 to 80,000 by 2040.
The $38 billion plan will help the nation prepare for the introduction of nuclear submarines and rising tensions in the region including from China.
China’s aggressive military build-up is widely understood to be one of the main reasons for Australia’s Defence spending increase.
An additional 18,500 soldiers, sailors and aviators will be hired over coming decades
“Our world is becoming increasingly uncertain so it’s important we take steps now to protect our people and our national interest over the coming decades,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.
