Clean green New Zealand, as you state, is far from the reality. During the 1960's
500 tonnes annually of DDT was sprayed onto pasture lands.
The Canterbury plains, in the east of the South Island, NZ's largest area of flat pasture land,
was inundated with the stuff,large residues still remain.
The "clean green' image is a total and successful(?) public relations exercise.
The use of 1080 poison,ostensibly to control opossums, weasels and stoats is laid
indiscriminately, often killing cattle, sheep and deer. 1080 is banned in many parts of
the world.
