I favour us humans being able to extract mineral resources from the Earth.
After all,without minerals and metals we'd be barely out of the stone age,and, as you'll
probably acknowledge modern technology relies heavily on multiple resources which must be mined.

To your point about "endemic" species, if you subscribe to the Gondwana Land thesis, and many reputable science types do, you'll know that both NZ and Oz were once part of the same land mass,so allow me to extrapolate from that position.
Barring a Maori St Patrick,and am not holding my breath, it seems entirely random chance that the portion of land mass now separate from Australia does not contain any snakes.
We have our own dinosaur,the Tuatara, but zero "endemic" snakes, for if we did, our precious
native birds might be having a much harder time..!!
