Be, I think you mean French Island is afire, not Philip Island. Did you know that all/majority of the koalas in Victoria, NSW and SA are derived from just one pair, which survived the koala skin slaughter of the 19th century. From memory, as the story goes, a visiting conservator from the London museum fell in love with a dairyman's daughter on French Island and gifted her a breading pair of koala's, which were the genesis of the southern species revival. If it hadn't been for those two koalas you'd be lucky to find any in the southern states.
In my weird and scattered past I have worked as a specialist koala consultant for several State governments and a wildlife guide for numerous documentary makers on the subject, so know much about our iconic friend Phascolarctos cinereus.
Can't say more for reasons of anonymity - coz well known in the science world for my specialist expertise in this area.
